PRESS RELEASE -‐ OCCUPYGHANA®’S POSITION ON CASH HAND-‐OUTS (SOLI) TO JOURNALISTS

On behalf of all well-‐meaning
Ghanaians,
who
support
the
vision
to
make
Ghana
work
again,
OccupyGhana®
would
like
to
commend
the
journalists
and
media
houses
who
continue
to
cover
our
programs
and
bring
the
activities
to
the
general
public
in
their
homes,
workplaces
and
on
every
street
corner.
OccupyGhana®
recognizes
the
crucial
role
that
journalists
play
in
propagating
our
message,
and
galvanizing
ordinary
citizens
to
positively
engage
with
government,
to
ensure
good
governance
is
entrenched
and
routinized
in
all
spheres
of
national
life.
OccupyGhana®
considers
the
media
as
key
partners/stakeholders
in
the
crusade
to
get
Ghana
working
again
for
the
benefit
of
all
Ghanaians.
That
said,
the
media
is
also
expected
to
act
in
line
with
the
standard
ethical
practices
that
underpin
their
profession.
As
a
movement
committed
to
promoting
good
governance
and
highlighting
all
corrupt
practices
that
contribute
to
economic
stagnation,
and
lack
of
development
of
our
country,
OccupyGhana®
has
taken
the
bold
decision
to
discontinue
the
widely
tolerated
practice
of
handing
out
cash
to
journalists
who
show
up
to
cover
events
and
report.
Fully
cognizant
that
the
practice
of
paying
‘soli’
provides
a
fertile
ground
for
corruption
to
thrive,
this
decision
was
taken
to
demonstrate
OccupyGhana®’s
anti-‐corruption
stance
and
also
to
establish,
for
the
record,
that
the
movement
is
not
about
talk
alone
but
also
about
deeds.
The
practice
of
handing
out
cash
that
is
carried
out
when
journalists
cover
events
flies
in
the
face
of
ethical
journalistic
practice,
as
it
can
be
construed
to
suggest
an
inducement
for
the
favorable
reporting
of
an
event.
It
also
potentially
raises
questions
about
the
accuracy,
fairness
and
balance
of
the
stories
that
are
eventually
written.
Although
we
believe
such
action
has
the
potential
to
“hurt”
coverage
of
OccupyGhana®
events,
we
believe
it’s
the
right
decision.
OccupyGhana®
stands
in
solidarity
with
the
many
journalists
who
do
not
insist
on
nor
request
cash
handouts
before
they
do
their
jobs.
In
fact
we
take
this
opportunity
to
acknowledge
their
principled
stance
and
hope
that
their
compatriots
will
come
to
accept
the
wisdom
of
their
position.
Once
again,
we
salute
these
patriotic
journalists
who
have
decided
to
put
Ghana
first
on
this
journey
to
get
Ghana
work
again
by
covering
and
reporting
OccupyGhana®
activities.
We
cannot
achieve
this
collective
goal
without
you.
This
is
a
national
crusade
and
every
well-‐meaning
Ghanaian
is
encouraged
to
OccupyGhana®
for
God
and
Country.
Let
us
be
the
generation
to
plant
trees
today
so
the
next
generation
can
enjoy
the
shade.
Because
of
you,
Ghana
will
work
again.
We
#OccupyGhana®
for
God
and
Country
just
because
we
know
our
Ghana
will
work
again!
Your’s
in
the
service
of
God
and
Country.

OCCUPYGHANA® RECEIVES M.M.T. BUS BRANDING DOCUMENTS FROM ATTORNEY-GENERAL

OCCUPYGHANA® RECEIVES M.M.T. BUS BRANDING DOCUMENTS FROM ATTORNEY-GENERAL

OccupyGhana® is pleased to announce that it has received from the Honourable Attorney-General and the Ministry of Transport, 22 documents covering the Smarttys Transaction (“Transaction.”)

It would be recalled that by a letter dated 1st February, 2016, OccupyGhana® requested from the Honourable Attorney-General, documents covering the Transaction. However, by a letter dated 3rd February, 2016, the Honourable Attorney-General declined to provide us with the documents on the ground that there was a pending legal action with respect to the same matter.

Not satisfied with this response, OccupyGhana® issued a Press Statement dated 7th February, 2016, in which it announced its intention to seek legal redress against the Honourable Attorney-General. On 18th February, 2016, OccupyGhana® commenced legal action against the Honourable Attorney-General, in the exercise of our right to information under article 21 of the Constitution.

In the meantime, the other action to which the Honourable Attorney-General referred, as the basis of her refusal to give the documents to us, was heard and determined by the High Court against the Attorney-General. While we waited for our action to be heard, we received word from the Honourable Attorney-General that she would make the documents available to us. True to her word, by an Affidavit dated 26th April 2016, filed on 28th April 2016 and sworn to by one Lawrence Kumi, Director of Research at the Ministry of Transport, the Honourable Attorney-General has delivered to us, documents relating to the Transaction, except one. The Honourable Attorney-General refuses to give to us, the report that she delivered to the Chief of Staff after her investigations on the ground that she considered that as confidential and privileged.

We have delivered these documents to our legal and audit teams for their review and advice. We will keep Ghanaians apprised and updated with the findings of our legal and audit teams, and as we have promised, should we find that any laws were broken or anything was done that was illegal, wrong or untoward, OccupyGhana® will pursue the matter to its logical and legal conclusions.

Yours in the service of occupying hearts and minds for God and Country

OCCUPYGHANA CONDEMNS THE EXISTENCE OF AZORKA BOYS, BOLGATANGA BULLDOGS, INVISIBLE FORCES AND RELATED GROUPS

OccupyGhana would like to amplify the discourse and concerns of many Ghanaians to have certain identifiable groups labelled as security companies to be disbanded. We also condemn the comments of the Interior Minister, Mark Woyongo, for seeming to condone the existence of such groups as it is known in Ghana that these groups only seem to exist during elections to breed violence.
